Secure and Protect the Surrounding Area As with many home projects, the first step on any painting project is to secure and protect all surrounding areas. Any and all furniture in the room to be painted should either be moved or thoroughly covered. We generally use 1.5 to 3.0 Mil lightweight plastic sheeting for this. Next use a combination of craft paper and masking tape to cover the areas of the floor adjacent to the actual areas to be painted. Painters drop cloths can now be used for supplemental protection in conjunction with the plastic sheeting, craft paper, and masking tape. |

Wall Surface Preparation |
Wall Surface Preparation Now the walls themselves should be prepped. This is a step of the preparation process which is often left out by impatient do-it-yourselfers and also by "bargain basement" residential painting contractors. Any experienced professional painter will tell you that the surface preparation is a very important step in order to result in a long lasting, beautiful paint finish. Existing Paint Surface Preparation If the existing paint has a gloss or shine to it, this sheen will require removal in order for the new paint to have a sufficient anchor in which to adhere properly. This is generally with a fine grade sand paper or sanding block. Next the walls should be washed thoroughly before applying the new paint. The optimum cleaning method would be to scrub the walls to be painted with a solution of trisodium phosphate and water. |
Sheetrock Preparation The next stage in the interior wall painting process is to examine the wall visually from a side-angle and determine if there are any areas that either dip down or stick up. Use your sandpaper or sanding block to sand level any protrusions and a putty knife with spackle or sheetrock mud. At this point it would also be a good idea to search for, and fill nail holes and/or cracks. Before the spackle mud dries it can be smoothed out with a wet sponge to knock out the excessively high areas. Once the repair is completely dry medium sandpaper or a flexible medium sanding block can be used to achieve the desired surface. Repeat the spackling process for any areas which are still under level and/or any repairs in which the mud has shrunken or cracked. |
Border Protection Preparation The final Preparation step is to tape off all of the edges of the area to be painted with blue painters tape. This should be done wherever the area to be painted boarders either an area to not be painted, and/or all baseboards, crown moldings, door and window frames, and ceilings. |

Finally you are ready to commence with the paint application process! |
